Special Stamps: Danxia Mountain

In May 2004, the State Postal Bureau issued a set of four special stamps featuring Danxia Mountain. It went on sale both at home and abroad.

Danxia Mountain, located nine kilometers south of Renhua County in Shaoguan City of northern Guangdong Province, got its name from the red sandy terrain that gives it such a brilliant color. ("Danxia" in Chinese means "red cloud"). Danxia landform is found mainly in China, western US, central Europe, and Australia. Danxia Mountain is a typical example of it and boasts the largest area of Danxia Landform in various types and different shapes. This set presents four scenic attractions - Sengmao Peak, Xianglong Lake, Chahu Peak and Jinjiang River.

As the huge rock on Sengmao Peak looks like a monk's hat, the peak was named Sengmao Peak ("Sengmao" in Chinese means "monk's hat"). Danxia landform is concentrated on this peak. Surrounded by stone castles, walls and pillars, the peak top resembles a rare stone park.

Located to the south of Zhanglao Peak, Xianglong Lake is in the shape of a green dragon, hence its name ("long" means dragon). Along the lake are 20 scenic spots represented by Longjiao Mountain and Longxu Gully. It is known for its beautiful mountain and river scenery.

Chahu Peak is teapot shaped, hence its name ("Chahu" in Chinese means teapot). Danxia landform predominates on the peak.

On its course north to the south through the Danxia Mountains, the Jin River passes numerous famous scenic spots.

This set has been produced through the offset-engraving process giving each picture a print effect.
