Life after Drugs

Drug Control in Yunnan Province

Yunnan police, armed police, customs officials and joint-defense corps joined hands and established the first line of defense against drugs along the frontier areas of the three rivers (Nu, Lancang and Honghe rivers) and three highways (Kunming-Ruili, Kunming-Daluo and Kunming-Wenshan). A second line of investigative defense was established in the hinterlands, and a third for drug interception in airports, railway stations, wharves and checkpoints. The combination of these three has been effective in preventing drugs from entering China via Yunnan.

In 1982, the Yunnan Province Drug Control Committee established China's first professional drug control team. Since then, drug law enforcement has been expanding. Currently, Yunnan has 152 professional drug control teams and 2,200 personnel. Between 1982 and 2003, Yunnan Province cracked 12,500 drug related cases entailing the capture 16,800 suspects, and seizure of 116.7 tons of drugs and 1,985 tons of illegal chemicals from which drugs can be extracted.
