China's Four Drug
Treatment Modes
1. Family Treatment:
This is undertaken at home by the family of an addict under the supervision
of the police and guidance of hospital staff. It applies to early-stage
addicts and the newly rehabilitated. The treatment period varies according
to the condition of the patient.
2. Voluntary Treatment:
Drug addicts voluntarily seek treatment at a public rehabilitation center.
Such centers are operated by the health department and supervised by the
police. The treatment period is usually 10-20 days. Its goal is to help
get rid of physical addiction.
3. Compulsory Treatment:
Addicts are sent to a permanent or temporary compulsory rehabilitation
center set up by governments at different levels. Such centers are managed
by the police and supervised by the health department. The treatment period
is 3-6 months, but no longer than a year.
4. Treatment Through
Reform and Labor: As stipulated in the Drug Control Resolution of the
Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, this program aims
to reform persistent addicts through enforced labor and get them off drugs
through compulsory rehabilitation.
