More Foreign Employees in Shanghai

The number of Shanghai's foreign employees continuously increases.

Surveys show that in the first quarter of 2004, employment certificates were issued to 2,954 foreign employees, an increase of 25 percent over the same period last year. There are 27,000 foreign employees currently working in Shanghai from 136 countries and regions, and the number of employment certificates has reached 50,000. "Rapid development of Shanghai's modern tertiary industry provides more space for foreign employees," says Sun Hande, director of the Shanghai Foreigner Employment Office.

The 2002-2003 Chinese Cities Development Report released by the China Association of Mayors ranked Shanghai first among 50 main Chinese cities in terms of comprehensive strength and development potential.
