Half
of Chinese Children Think Conservatively
In a recent survey
on innovatory ability it was found that a good half of Chinese
youth have a set mode of thinking. This makes them conservative,
and unquestioning of authority.
The survey covered
12,000 middle school and college students in 31 provinces, autonomous
regions and municipalities on the mainland. The result revealed
that 50.9 percent of interviewees believe that a fixed procedure
applies to the solving of any particular problem. Less than
half expressed any doubt in what their teachers and textbooks
say.
Overcautious thinking,
or thinking in fixed mode, is necessary for application of existing
knowledge, but is detrimental to innovation and creativity.
