Shanghai Releases White Paper on Commerce

The Shanghai Chamber of Commerce has published the city's first White Paper -- Shanghai's Retail Development in 2003. The White Paper states that Shanghai's retail business will follow 8 trends in the coming 3 to 5 years: department stores will be further reshuffled; the food and grocery sector will continue its modernization process; garment and accessories, and office accoutrements will become new staple items; the market will open further, drawing more retail companies into the city; a few large retailers will dominate the majority of the market share; shopping malls will put greater emphasis on renovation and optimization; managerial technology and breakthroughs in supply chains will bring a new competitive edge; and the growth of non-store retail, such as automat, e-commerce and mail commerce, will accelerate.
