China Telecom Expects New Profits from Broadband

China Telecom recently staged a campaign "Broadband Super Speed Trip 2003" to promote its broadband service. The campaign promotes the on-line games, entertainment, videos, and tele-education available through the company's broadband backbone and inner-city networks, broadband LANs and the Internet. The campaign's purpose is to let users personally experience the quality and efficiency of broadband. China Telecom's sizable input is in the expectation that its broadband service will become a major aspect of its business. By the end of 2002 China Telecom had reported 2.54 million broadband customers, accounting for 79 percent of the national total. This year it set itself the goal of increasing its broadband users to 3.7 million, and to clearing a profit of 7 million yuan.
