Pre-marriage Medical Examinations now Optional in China

Before a wedding ceremony such as this one in a Shanghai hotel, the bride and groom were required until recently to submit to pre-marital medical examinations. These have now been deemed optional.

In the newly announced regulations governing marriage registration, pre-marital medical examinations are deemed optional. These medical examinations, which screen for hereditary, mental and venereal diseases, have been in force for 50 years. The new regulations stipulate that if both sides are informed and willing to take certain preventive measures, no check-up is necessary.
