China's Last Hunting Tribe Bids Farewell to the Mountains

The nomadic Ewenki living in Aoluguya Village are known as the people that move on the backs of reindeer. After 300 years of wandering, they settled in Aoluguya in 1965, closely related families grouping together under clan communes.

The Ewenki have a unique material and spiritual civilization. Objects like shotguns, bows and arrows, birch-bark boats, and skis occupy an important position in their lives. The Aoluguya Ewenki have no written script, and are mostly followers of the Shamanim.

They evolved from nomads to farmers during the past few decades, and gradually shed primitive modes of production and living. The Ewenki are now experiencing multi-faceted development. To maintain ecological balance of the local primeval forest, on August 10, 2003, the 498 Ewenki living in Aoluguya Village began the move to their new homeland.

The Ewenki evolution from nomads to farmers was a key transition.

Ewenki used to live by hunting and reindeer breeding.

Food Storehouses are built in trees.

A traditional Ewenki dwelling, this makeshift, umbrella-shaped tent has a roof made of birch bark.
