Beijing Subway to Use A, B, C and D for Four Directions

The Beijing subway is to adopt Chinese-English directive signs. The Chinese characters originally used for east, west, south and north are to be replaced by the letters A, B, C and D. The subway operator explained that the four Chinese characters indicating directions no longer meet the needs of passengers, given the diversity of subway stations and increases in the number of entrances and exits. Therefore, universal signs used worldwide will be adopted. Subway maps will also be put up at ticket offices for the convenience of passengers. It is reported that this new directive system for the Beijing subway will cost nearly 10 million yuan and will be installed at all 38 subway stations before the end of this year.
