Chinese painting is quite different from the western both in philosophy and in concrete skills. In China, painting is a poem, poem is a painting. Painting is a mirror of the painter's mind, and an expression of his/her philosophy. Calligraphy and seals are two important parts of a finished painting, and it is quite popular to have several seals and some calligraphy on one painting.
