Foreign tourists in Shanghai.

According to an official of the National Tourism Administration, China's tourism revenue increased by an average two digits annually from 1996 to 2002 -- an increase far above the average GDP growth rate. Tourism is emerging as a new engine in the Chinese economy, the number of foreign tourists and amount of foreign currency generated in China by tourism ranking the fifth in the world. By the end of 2002 foreign investment utilized in tourism reached US $50 billion, accounting for 11 percent of the total in all sectors in China.
