High and New Technology vs. High Salaries

It is reported that 2 yuan out of every 100 yuan of income tax in China comes from the Haidian High and New Technology Zone, known as birthplace of wealth. If the criterion for deciding who qualifies as a rich person is set at an annual income of 60,000 yuan, then over 50 percent of employees in the High and New-Tech Zone easily qualify. The majority of high wage earners are in electronic information, new materials, energy resources, environmental science, photo-electro-mechanical integration, new pharmaceuticals, life sciences, and bio-engineering pharmaceuticals. According to authoritative statistics, the number of new millionaires within the Haidian High and New-Tech Zone in 2000 exceeded that of the accumulated previous five years, including more than 100 people whose annual income exceeds 10 million yuan.
