To China Today:

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of your magazine, I send you my warmest congratulations!

Over the past 50 years, by enthusiastically reporting China's great process of socialist construction, and reform and opening-up, you have made important contributions to the promotion of understanding between China and the peoples of the world, and to the consolidation of friendship between them and the Chinese people. In her lifetime, Comrade Soong Ching Ling poured much of her energy into the founding and development of your magazine. I hope that you will carry on its fine traditions, make ever greater efforts, advance with the times, work still harder for reform and opening-up and the modernization of our country, and continue to devote your capabilities to the sublime cause of promoting peace and development for humankind.

ON its 50th anniversary, the staff of China Today review the half a century that their magazine covers. Named China Reconstructs in 1952 and renamed China Today in 1990 according to the wish of its late founder Soong Ching Ling, this magazine has always been in sync with the rhythm of China, presenting China's construction achievements from a special, true-to-life perspective. Looking through back issues over the past 50 years is like rolling down a scrolled record of the course of development of the People's Republic.

HE Liou (Oriol), our foreign expert, has been a colleague of mine for five years. He and his Chinese wife have a very lovely daughter. Unlike those of a fiery temperament that one associates with Latin blood, Oriol has a quiet, gentle demeanor that frequently lights up with a bright, warm smile.
